Cistercian Route
BackThe Cistercian route consists of the Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges Monasteries, located in three territories between Tarragona and Lleida: Alt Camp, Conca de Barberà and Urgell.
Santes Creus
The Santes Creus monastery is located in the northern sector of the so-called Camp de Tarragona, in the Alt Camp County, in the Gaia River valley. The three medieval enclosures have been partly altered by housing construction in the old monastic buildings, which form the present town of Santes Creus. A very simple door and the chapel of Santa Llúcia remain in the first enclosure. The Baroque Royal Door leads to the second enclosure and to the large square, which has a fountain dedicated to Sant Bernat Calvo and houses decorated with sgraffito (decoration scratched or inscribed on plaster or potter's clay). The Abbey Palace has a small cloister and was built in 1640 on top of a former hospital. This is where city hall is located today.
Poblet
The Santa Maria de Poblet monastery is located in a beautiful spot at the foot of the Prades Mountains, near Montblanc and L'Espluga Francolí, in the Conca de Barbera region. It is an ensemble that is among the most important and well-preserved monastic monuments in Europe.
Vallbona de les Monges
The Vallbona de les Monges monastery, home of the Cistercian nuns, is found in a valley near the El Tallat Mountains. It is a magnificent architectural complex and one of the most unique of this particular female order, whose monastic life has endured over eight centuries and up until this day.
